John Spencer of Cannon Hall, Cawthorne, was the son of William Spencer and his wife, Christiana, daughter of Robert Ashton. He was educated at Winchester and in 1738 went to University College, Oxford and later qualified for the Bar. He engaged the architect, John Carr to enlarge Cannon Hall and the additional two wings included a library to house his collection of books.
